We arrived in Kas from Fethiye by a small local bus, or Dolmus as they call them in Turkey. Our last host, Omer, had recommended Ani Hostel, and after seeing that they had a fantastic terrace overlooking the sea, we settled down there for two nights. The first day we felt like stretching our legs after the three hour bus ride, so after enjoying a grilled fish sandwich we set off to hike a small portion of the Lycian Way – a 509km walking route that covers the main territory of that ancient civilization. The destination was a small beach that can only be reached on foot or by boat, and the trail took us along the edge of the water with beautiful views of the coast. On the way we passed some old Lycian tombs which are the most significant relics left behind by these people.
Along the way we met an Australian brother and sister who were hiking the whole Lycian Trail (with spear fishing gun in hand and no free meals after 2 weeks of trying) hoping to finish in the span of one month. By the time we reached the small beach we were more than ready for a dip in the water. It was a great way to spend the afternoon, and get some much needed exercise after our road trip.
The next day we wanted to visit the ruins of the sunken city of Kekova. This was a Lycian town that was submerged after a series of earthquakes during the 2nd century, and is located close to Kas. This site can be seen by boat or sea kayak, and you can probably guess that we opted for kayaking which also allowed us to spend more quality time with the ruins – which is just what ruins want really. Great adventure on the high seas!

We were on a group trip with lunch included, so we enjoyed a quick exploration at a nearby island with the ruins of an old castle perched on top before tucking in to more great food. In the group we met a nice couple from Paris, France, and they invited us over for drinks on their terrace overlooking the harbour after dinner. It was a nice way to end the day, and the following morning we headed back to Fethiye for our next adventure… “WOOF”-ing!
Stay tuned…
