Selchuk and Ephesus

Our next stop was the small town of Selchuk, close enough for a day trip to one of the best preserved ruins in Europe, Ephesus. We had heard through the backpacker’s grapevine that there was an excellent hostel by the name of Atilla’s Getaway. We were not disappointed. The place was in the country, very chill with great hang out areas including a pool and wonderful home-cooked Turkish food.

Every night Atilla and his two brothers worked to create a super fun atmosphere. It was a great base from which to explore the surrounding area and Ben was able to get some cheap thrills during a hot afternoon swimming session.

We hiked through the countryside to reach the site of Ephesus, and it was well worth the effort. The ruins were large and very well preserved, and it wasn’t hard to imagine the splendour of the place in the times of the Greeks and Romans.

We also took a day trip to Pamukkale, famous for its intriguing natural calcium formations that from afar look like cascading waves of snow. The waters flowing through the deposits were warm enough for a swim.

At Pumakkale we enjoyed a unique foot treatment with small fish that eat dry skin – oh yes! For only a few lira we stuck our feet into tubs full of these fish and after a very ticklish twenty minutes, emerged with pink shiny tootsies. Very interesting!

We bid goodbye to Selchuk and headed towards Marmaris, a large town further down the coast where we planned to rent a car for a fun road trip along the Mediterranean...
